How to Make Homemade Quilts

I love homemade quilts, because nobody else has the exact same quilt. They're unique! And you can make them however you want.

Have you ever gone quilt shopping to find NOTHING you liked? I have... So why not make a quilt the way you want it, or just right for whomever you're giving it to.

Homemade quilts are perfect for Christmas, Birthdays, or baby showers. Whatever the occasion, it's like giving a big, warm, cuddly hug.

You can make a quilt however you want, but here are instructions for a really easy one.

What You'll Need-

  • Scissors
  • Yarn
  • Batting
  • Flannel
  • Flat sheet -the higher the thread count, the better!
  • Quilting frame
  • Quilting thumb tacks
  • Quilting needles

The sizes depend on what size bed you're making it for. Here's a little chart showing how much you'll need for each size. Yardage is based on 44" wide fabric.

  • Crib (44"x36") -1 yard flannel, 1 yard flannel or other kind of fabric, crib size batting
  • Twin (63"x87") -3.5 yards flannel (will cut into 2-63"x44" pieces), twin size flat sheet, twin size batting,
  • Double (80"x87") -4.5 yards flannel (will cut into 2-80"x44" pieces), double/queen size flat sheet, double size batting
  • Queen (87"x99") -5.5 yards flannel (will cut into 2-99"x44" pieces), queen size flat sheet, queen size batting
  • King (108"x100") -8.5 yards flannel (will cut into 2-44"x100" pieces, and 1-22"x100" piece), king size flat sheet, king size batting

1. Ok, now to make those homemade quilts! Once you have everything you need and get your pieces of flannel cut, then sew them together to make the desired dimensions described above.

2. Cut a 5"x5" square out of cardboard or paper. You will use this to mark all the spots that you'll tie the yarn through. So move the square along the flat sheet and mark every corner with chalk. So you should have a chalk mark every five inches all over the quilt.

3. Assemble your quilt by putting the flannel piece on the bottom, then the batting, then the flat sheet. Make sure the chalk marks are facing up. Make sure everything is lined up and even, and then cut off excess.

4. Tack your assembled quilt onto a quilt frame along all edges.

5. Get your yarn and quilting needle and tie a double knot through all layers of the quilt. A good way to do this is to take the yarn and go down and up at each mark without cutting or tying. Do this until you run out of your piece of yarn. Then, cut between each mark, and then tie each in double knots. Make sure you keep the fringe evenly trimmed.

6. Roll quilt on two ends of the framing so that you can tie the middle of the quilt. Once you're done, take the quilt off the frame.

7. Ok, now for the edges... This is a very simple version. But of course, you can do the edges anyway you'd like. Do one edge at a time. Fold up edge so that the flannel (back) is folded under a quarter inch or so and then over the other layers so that about 1 inch of the flannel (back) is showing on the front. You'll have to stuff the layers (batting, and flat sheet) into your edge. It's basically like doing a seam but stuffing all the extra into it. So do that, and pin it down all along one edge.

8. You'll then top-stitch that close to the edge of the seam using your sewing machine. Once you have one edge done, then pin and sew the next edge.

9. For the corners, you'll sort of do a mitered edge so it's diagonal, but you'll top-stitch it. You'll want to cut a little square off the corner before you sew it, so there won't be so much thickness. Then you'll fold one side over and diagonally on the edge. Top-stitch that, and you might want to top-stitch again. Then continue to do the same with all edges.

And then you're done! What comfy homemade quilts you can make to give away with love.
